System of Wiring and Wiring Installation for Domestic Lighting

In building construction, electrical wiring plays a vital role in providing lighting and power to residential structures. For ITI Draughtsman Civil students, understanding different systems of wiring and their installation methods is essential for preparing accurate building service drawings and layouts.

1. System of Wiring

A wiring system refers to the method of installing electrical conductors and accessories in a building to distribute electrical energy safely and efficiently. The choice of wiring system depends on factors such as cost, safety, durability, appearance, and type of building.

Types of Wiring Systems

(a) Cleat Wiring
  • Used for temporary installations.
  • Wires are supported on porcelain or plastic cleats.
  • Easy to install and remove.
  • Not suitable for permanent wiring due to poor safety and appearance.
(b) Batten Wiring (CTS/TRS Wiring)
  • Wires are fixed on wooden battens using clips.
  • Commonly used in residential buildings.
  • Neat appearance and easy installation.
  • Moderate cost and safety.
(c) Casing and Capping Wiring
  • Wires are enclosed in wooden or PVC casing and covered with a cap.
  • Provides good mechanical protection.
  • Better appearance compared to batten wiring.
  • Not widely used nowadays due to higher cost and maintenance.
(d) Conduit Wiring
  • Wires are drawn through metal or PVC conduits.
  • Can be surface or concealed type.
  • Highly safe, durable, and widely used in modern construction.
  • Provides excellent protection against fire and mechanical damage.

Among these systems, conduit wiring (especially concealed conduit wiring) is most commonly used in modern residential buildings due to its safety and aesthetic advantages.

2. Factors Affecting Selection of Wiring System

  • Safety: Protection against electric shock and fire hazards.
  • Durability: Long life with minimal maintenance.
  • Cost: Initial and maintenance cost.
  • Appearance: Neat and clean finish.
  • Environmental Conditions: Moisture, heat, and mechanical damage.

3. Wiring Installation for Domestic Lighting

Domestic lighting installation refers to the arrangement of electrical wiring, switches, and lighting points in a house. It ensures proper illumination, convenience, and safety for occupants.

Main Components of Domestic Lighting Installation

  • Service Line: Connects the building to the main power supply.
  • Energy Meter: Measures electricity consumption.
  • Main Switch: Controls the entire electrical supply.
  • Distribution Board (DB): Distributes power to different circuits.
  • Wiring Circuits: Carry electricity to lighting points.
  • Switches and Sockets: Control and operate electrical devices.
  • Lighting Fixtures: Lamps, bulbs, and tube lights.

Types of Circuits in Domestic Wiring

  • Lighting Circuit: Supplies power to lamps, fans, and light fittings.
  • Power Circuit: Supplies power to heavy appliances like heaters and refrigerators.

Steps in Domestic Wiring Installation

  1. Prepare a wiring layout plan showing all light points, switches, and sockets.
  2. Select appropriate wiring system (generally concealed conduit wiring).
  3. Fix conduits or battens as per the layout.
  4. Draw wires through conduits or fix them on battens.
  5. Install switch boxes, junction boxes, and distribution boards.
  6. Connect switches, sockets, and light fittings.
  7. Ensure proper earthing of the system.
  8. Test the installation before final use.

4. Important Rules for Domestic Lighting Wiring

  • Switches should be connected in the live wire, not in the neutral wire.
  • Proper color coding of wires should be followed.
  • Each circuit should not exceed the prescribed load limit.
  • All metal parts must be properly earthed.
  • Use of MCBs or fuses is necessary for circuit protection.

5. Advantages of Proper Wiring Installation

  • Ensures safety of occupants.
  • Provides efficient lighting and power distribution.
  • Reduces chances of electrical faults.
  • Enhances the life of electrical appliances.
