DRAUGHTSMAN MECHANICAL Course Information

The Draughtsman Mechanical trade is a two-year vocational training program offered under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India. The course is designed to develop skilled professionals who can prepare mechanical engineering drawings and assist engineers in the manufacturing and production sectors. The program focuses on building both practical drafting skills and theoretical knowledge required for mechanical design and production drawing. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

During the two-year training duration, trainees are taught subjects such as Professional Skill, Professional Knowledge, and Employability Skills that are directly related to the job role of a draughtsman in the mechanical engineering field. The training also includes project work and extracurricular activities that help develop confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities among trainees.

Objective of the Course

The primary objective of the Draughtsman Mechanical course is to train students in preparing technical drawings of machines, mechanical components, and industrial equipment. Mechanical drawings are essential for manufacturing industries because they provide precise instructions for production and assembly processes.

The course aims to develop competencies such as interpreting technical data, preparing detailed and assembly drawings, using standard engineering symbols, and working with modern computer-aided drafting tools. By acquiring these skills, trainees become capable of supporting engineers and technicians in manufacturing operations and mechanical design tasks.

Training Methodology

The training methodology used in the Draughtsman Mechanical course follows a competency-based approach. Practical skills are taught from basic to advanced levels, while theoretical subjects are delivered simultaneously to support practical work. This integrated approach allows trainees to apply theoretical knowledge while performing drafting tasks.

Initially, trainees begin with basic freehand sketches and manual drafting using drawing instruments. As they progress through the course, they learn advanced techniques such as computer-aided drafting (CAD) and 3D modeling. By the end of the training program, trainees are capable of preparing production drawings and detailed mechanical designs using digital tools.

First Year Training

The first year of the Draughtsman Mechanical course focuses on developing fundamental drafting skills and understanding basic engineering drawing principles. Trainees begin by learning how to construct geometrical figures using drawing instruments and prepare drawing sheets according to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Students learn about basic drafting terminology, orthographic projection, auxiliary views, and sectional views used in engineering drawings. Topics such as lettering, dimensioning, and technical sketching are also covered to help trainees produce professional engineering drawings.

In addition, trainees study various types of projections including isometric, oblique, and perspective projections. These techniques help visualize three-dimensional objects in two-dimensional drawings.

The first year training also introduces students to the drawing of machine elements such as fasteners, weld joints, and locking devices based on standard engineering specifications. Trainees also receive exposure to CAD technology for preparing two-dimensional drawings.

Exposure to Allied Trades

Another important component of the first-year training is exposure to allied engineering trades. Trainees gain basic knowledge about tools and equipment used in trades such as Fitter, Turner, Machinist, Sheet Metal Worker, Welder, Foundryman, Electrician, and Maintenance Motor Vehicles.

This cross-disciplinary exposure helps trainees understand the manufacturing process and the practical application of mechanical drawings in workshop environments. It also improves their understanding of machine components and production techniques used in industry.

Safety Training

Safety training is an essential part of the Draughtsman Mechanical course. Students learn about occupational safety, health, and environmental practices (OSH&E). Training includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fire safety procedures, and first aid techniques.

The course also introduces the concept of 5S workplace management, which promotes organization, cleanliness, and efficiency in industrial environments. Understanding these safety and management practices helps trainees maintain safe and productive workplaces.

Second Year Training

The second year of the course focuses on advanced drafting techniques and computer-aided design. Trainees develop skills in CAD software by performing practical assignments using different commands and drawing tools.

Students learn to prepare detailed and assembly drawings of mechanical components such as pulleys, pipe fittings, gears, and cams. These drawings include dimensions, annotations, and specifications required for manufacturing and assembly processes.

Another important part of the second-year training is learning about three-dimensional modeling. Trainees create 3D models of mechanical components using CAD software and generate views from these models for technical documentation.

Students also learn how to print and plot drawings, convert drawings into PDF format, and manage digital drawing files.

Production Drawing and Industrial Layout

In the final stage of training, trainees learn to prepare production drawings for machine components by taking measurements from existing parts. This practice helps them develop skills in interpreting physical components and converting them into technical drawings.

Trainees also learn how to prepare workshop layouts for production industries. These layouts consider factors such as process flow, workspace arrangement, and human ergonomics to ensure efficient production processes.

Integration of Theory and Practical Knowledge

Professional knowledge subjects are taught alongside practical training to support the learning process. Trainees study topics such as engineering materials, tolerance systems, fits, metalworking processes, and heat treatment methods.

They also learn about various coatings used to protect metals, types of bearings, lubrication methods, and properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals used in mechanical engineering applications.

Project Work and Skill Development

At the end of each training year, trainees complete project work to demonstrate the skills they have acquired. These projects may include preparing detailed mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, or CAD models of machine components.

Project work helps trainees apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems and develop independent working abilities required in industry.

Conclusion

The Draughtsman Mechanical course provides comprehensive training in engineering drawing, mechanical design, and computer-aided drafting. Through a combination of practical training, theoretical learning, and project work, the program prepares trainees for careers in the manufacturing and mechanical engineering industries.

With the growing demand for skilled technicians in modern industries, trained mechanical draughtsmen play a vital role in designing mechanical components and supporting production activities. This course therefore contributes significantly to the development of skilled manpower for the manufacturing sector.
