Roofs & Roof Coverings – Purposes, Elements, Types (Flat and Pitched)

Roofs are an essential part of any building structure, providing protection and comfort to occupants. In ITI Draughtsman Civil, the study of roofs and roof coverings includes understanding their purposes, elements, and types such as flat and pitched roofs.

1. Purposes of Roof

The roof serves several important functions in a building:

  • Protects the building from rain, sun, wind, and dust.
  • Provides thermal insulation against heat and cold.
  • Ensures proper drainage of rainwater.
  • Enhances the appearance of the structure.
  • Provides space for utilities like water tanks and solar panels.

2. Elements of Roof

A roof consists of various structural and functional components that work together:

  • Roof Covering: Outer layer protecting against weather.
  • Roof Structure: Includes slabs, beams, or trusses.
  • Rafters: Sloping members supporting roof covering.
  • Purlins: Horizontal supports for rafters.
  • Ridge: Topmost horizontal line of the roof.
  • Eaves: Lower edge projecting beyond walls.
  • Gutters: Channels for rainwater drainage.
  • Flashing: Waterproofing at joints and intersections.

3. Types of Roofs

Roofs are mainly classified into two types based on their shape and slope:

(a) Flat Roof

  • Nearly horizontal with slight slope for drainage.
  • Constructed using RCC or reinforced brick.
  • Common in residential and commercial buildings.
  • Can be used as terrace.

Advantages of Flat Roof

  • Simple construction and low cost.
  • Provides usable space.
  • Easy maintenance.

Disadvantages of Flat Roof

  • Not suitable for heavy rainfall areas.
  • Possibility of water leakage.

(b) Pitched Roof

  • Inclined or sloping roof.
  • Suitable for areas with heavy rainfall or snowfall.
  • Constructed using timber or steel trusses.

Advantages of Pitched Roof

  • Efficient drainage of rainwater.
  • Less leakage problems.
  • Longer life.

Disadvantages of Pitched Roof

  • Higher construction cost.
  • Less usable space.

4. Roof Coverings

Roof coverings are materials used on the outer surface of the roof to protect it from weather conditions.

  • Tiles (clay, concrete)
  • Slate
  • Metal sheets (GI, aluminium)
  • Asbestos cement sheets
  • RCC slab covering
  • Thatch (in rural areas)

Role of Draughtsman Civil

A Draughtsman Civil prepares roof plans, sections, and detailed drawings showing slopes, elements, and materials. Proper understanding ensures accurate construction and long-lasting performance.

Conclusion

Roofs and roof coverings are essential for the protection and durability of buildings. Flat and pitched roofs are the most commonly used types, each suitable for different conditions.

Understanding their purposes, elements, and types helps ITI Draughtsman Civil students design safe, efficient, and durable structures.
