Draughtsman Civil

ITI Draughtsman (Civil) Trade

The ITI "Draughtsman (Civil)" trade is a two-year vocational training program under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), governed by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). This course equips trainees with the skills to create detailed technical drawings, plans, and layouts for civil engineering projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, and water supply systems, using both manual drafting techniques and computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Types of Foundation

Foundations are the most important part of any building as they transfer the load of the structure safely to the ground. The selection of a suitable type of foundation depends on factors such as soil condition, load of the structure, and site requirements. In the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, understanding different types of foundations is essential for preparing accurate drawings and designing safe structures.

Foundations are broadly classified into two main categories: shallow foundations and deep foundations. Each type is used based on soil bearing capacity and structural needs.

1. Shallow Foundations

Shallow foundations are those in which the depth of foundation is small compared to its width. These are used where the soil near the surface has sufficient bearing capacity.

Types of Shallow Foundations

  • Strip Footing: Used under load-bearing walls to distribute load evenly.
  • Isolated Footing: Provided under individual columns.
  • Combined Footing: Supports two or more columns when they are close to each other.
  • Raft or Mat Foundation: Covers the entire building area to distribute load over weak soil.

Advantages:

  • Economical and easy to construct
  • Suitable for light to medium structures

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for weak or loose soil
  • Limited load-bearing capacity

2. Deep Foundations

Deep foundations are used when the surface soil is weak and cannot support the load. These foundations transfer the load to deeper, stronger soil layers.

Types of Deep Foundations

  • Pile Foundation: Long vertical members driven into the ground to transfer load to deeper layers.
  • Pier Foundation: Large diameter shafts constructed in the ground.
  • Caisson Foundation: Used in waterlogged areas and bridge construction.

Advantages:

  • Suitable for heavy structures
  • Provides strong support in weak soil conditions

Limitations:

  • Costly and complex construction
  • Requires skilled labor and equipment

Factors Affecting Selection of Foundation

The type of foundation is selected based on the following factors:

  • Soil type and bearing capacity
  • Load of the structure
  • Depth of groundwater
  • Site conditions and environment

Importance of Proper Foundation Selection

Choosing the correct type of foundation is essential for:

  • Ensuring structural stability
  • Preventing settlement and failure
  • Increasing durability of the building
  • Reducing construction cost

Applications of Different Foundations

  • Residential Buildings: Shallow foundations
  • High-Rise Buildings: Deep foundations
  • Bridges and Dams: Caisson and pile foundations

Importance in Draughtsman Civil Trade

Knowledge of different types of foundations helps draughtsmen in preparing foundation layouts and structural drawings. It also helps in selecting suitable foundation types based on site conditions.

Conclusion

Foundations are the base of any structure and play a vital role in its stability and safety. Understanding the types of foundations and their applications is essential for proper construction.

For students of the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, knowledge of foundations is crucial for designing safe and durable buildings. Proper selection and construction of foundations ensure the success of any construction project.
