ITI Draughtsman (Civil) Trade

The ITI "Draughtsman (Civil)" trade is a two-year vocational training program under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), governed by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). This course equips trainees with the skills to create detailed technical drawings, plans, and layouts for civil engineering projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, and water supply systems, using both manual drafting techniques and computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Sequence of Construction of a Building

The construction of a building is a systematic process that involves a series of well-planned steps. Each stage of construction must be carried out in a proper sequence to ensure strength, safety, and durability of the structure. In the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, understanding this sequence is essential for preparing drawings, supervising work, and ensuring proper execution at the site.

The sequence of construction begins with site selection and ends with finishing work. Each step plays a vital role in the successful completion of a building project.

1. Site Selection and Preparation

The first step in building construction is selecting a suitable site. The site should have good soil conditions, proper drainage, and easy access to water, electricity, and transportation.

  • Clearing vegetation and debris
  • Leveling the ground
  • Providing temporary facilities

Proper site preparation ensures a strong foundation for construction.

2. Setting Out

Setting out involves marking the layout of the building on the ground as per the drawing. It includes marking the position of walls, columns, and foundation trenches.

  • Using pegs, strings, and lime powder
  • Ensuring correct dimensions and alignment

Accurate setting out is essential to avoid errors in construction.

3. Excavation

Excavation is the process of digging the soil to create space for the foundation. The depth and width depend on the type of building and soil conditions.

  • Excavation of trenches
  • Removal of loose soil
  • Providing safety measures

Proper excavation ensures a stable base for the foundation.

4. Foundation Construction

The foundation is the lowest part of the building that transfers the load to the ground. It must be strong and stable to support the structure.

  • Laying of concrete (PCC)
  • Construction of footing
  • Use of reinforcement if required

A well-constructed foundation ensures the safety and durability of the building.

5. Plinth Construction

The plinth is the portion of the building between ground level and floor level. It prevents moisture from entering the building.

  • Construction of plinth walls
  • Filling with soil or sand
  • Providing damp proof course (DPC)

The plinth provides a base for the superstructure.

6. Superstructure (Wall Construction)

The superstructure includes all parts of the building above the plinth. Walls are constructed using bricks, stones, or blocks.

  • Brick or block masonry
  • Proper bonding and alignment
  • Provision of openings for doors and windows

The superstructure forms the main body of the building.

7. Lintel and Roof Construction

Lintels are provided above doors and windows to support the load above openings. The roof is constructed to protect the building from weather.

  • Construction of lintel beams
  • Roof slab casting (RCC or other materials)
  • Waterproofing of roof

The roof completes the structural framework of the building.

8. Flooring

Flooring is the process of laying a finished surface over the floor base. It improves appearance and usability.

  • Laying base concrete
  • Applying floor finish (tiles, marble, etc.)

9. Plastering

Plastering is done to provide a smooth and even surface to walls and ceilings.

  • Application of mortar
  • Finishing and curing

It also protects the structure from weather effects.

10. Doors, Windows and Fixtures

Installation of doors, windows, and other fixtures is done after structural work.

  • Fixing frames and shutters
  • Installation of fittings

11. Painting and Finishing

The final stage involves painting and finishing work to improve appearance and durability.

  • Surface preparation
  • Application of paint or polish

Importance of Proper Sequence

Following the correct sequence of construction ensures:

  • Structural stability
  • Efficient use of materials
  • Safety during construction
  • Timely completion of work

Conclusion

The sequence of construction of a building is a well-organized process that must be followed carefully to achieve a strong and durable structure. Each stage, from site preparation to finishing, plays an important role in the overall success of the project.

For students of the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, understanding this sequence is essential for preparing accurate drawings, supervising construction, and ensuring quality work in real-world projects.
