Metals: Characteristics, Types and Uses

Metals are one of the most important materials used in civil engineering and construction. They are widely used due to their strength, durability, and versatility. In the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, knowledge of metals is essential for preparing structural drawings, selecting appropriate materials, and understanding construction techniques.

Metals are used in various forms such as structural members, reinforcement, sheets, pipes, and fittings. Their properties make them suitable for both structural and non-structural applications.

Characteristics of Metals

Metals possess several important properties that make them suitable for construction:

  • High Strength: Metals can withstand heavy loads and stresses.
  • Durability: They have a long service life when properly maintained.
  • Ductility: Metals can be stretched into wires without breaking.
  • Malleability: Metals can be hammered or rolled into sheets.
  • Conductivity: Good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Recyclability: Metals can be reused and recycled.

These characteristics make metals an essential part of modern construction and engineering works.

Types of Metals

Metals are broadly classified into two main categories:

1. Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals contain iron as the main component. They are widely used in construction due to their strength and availability.

  • Iron: Basic metal used in various forms.
  • Steel: Alloy of iron and carbon, widely used in construction.
  • Cast Iron: Hard and brittle, used for pipes and fittings.

Properties:

  • High strength
  • Magnetic in nature
  • Prone to corrosion

2. Non-Ferrous Metals

Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron. They are generally lighter and more resistant to corrosion.

  • Aluminium: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant
  • Copper: Good conductor of electricity
  • Brass: Alloy of copper and zinc

Properties:

  • Non-magnetic
  • Corrosion-resistant
  • Good electrical conductivity

Uses of Metals

Metals are used in a wide range of construction and engineering applications:

  • Structural Work: Steel is used in beams, columns, and frameworks.
  • Reinforcement: Steel bars are used in reinforced cement concrete (RCC).
  • Roofing: Metal sheets are used for roofing purposes.
  • Doors and Windows: Aluminium and steel are used for frames.
  • Pipes and Fittings: Cast iron and copper pipes are used in plumbing.
  • Electrical Work: Copper is used for wiring.

Advantages of Metals

  • High strength and load-bearing capacity
  • Long service life
  • Recyclable and reusable
  • Versatile applications

Limitations of Metals

  • Prone to corrosion (especially ferrous metals)
  • High cost compared to some materials
  • Requires protective coatings

Protection of Metals

Metals require protection to prevent corrosion and increase their life. Common methods include:

  • Painting
  • Galvanization
  • Coating with protective materials

Importance in Draughtsman Civil Trade

Knowledge of metals is essential for draughtsmen in preparing structural drawings and selecting appropriate materials. It helps in understanding load-bearing structures and designing safe and durable buildings.

Proper knowledge ensures efficient use of materials and improves the quality of construction.

Conclusion

Metals are indispensable materials in civil engineering due to their strength, durability, and versatility. Understanding their characteristics, types, and uses is essential for students of the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade.

By selecting suitable metals and applying proper protection methods, strong and long-lasting structures can be achieved. This knowledge is fundamental for successful construction and engineering practices.
