Draughtsman Civil

ITI Draughtsman (Civil) Trade

The ITI "Draughtsman (Civil)" trade is a two-year vocational training program under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), governed by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). This course equips trainees with the skills to create detailed technical drawings, plans, and layouts for civil engineering projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, and water supply systems, using both manual drafting techniques and computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Vernier Scale – Types

A vernier scale is a precision measuring device used to read small subdivisions of a main scale. It is commonly used in instruments like theodolites, vernier calipers, and sextants. In ITI Draughtsman Civil, understanding vernier scale types is essential for accurate measurement of angles and dimensions.

1. Definition of Vernier Scale

A vernier scale is a secondary scale that slides along the main scale and helps to measure values more precisely by reading fractions of the smallest division of the main scale.

2. Types of Vernier Scale

Vernier scales are mainly classified into two types based on their construction:

(a) Direct Vernier

  • The divisions on the vernier scale are slightly smaller than those on the main scale.
  • The vernier scale moves in the same direction as the main scale.
  • Used in most measuring instruments like vernier calipers.

Example: 10 vernier divisions = 9 main scale divisions.

(b) Retrograde Vernier

  • The divisions on the vernier scale are slightly larger than those on the main scale.
  • The vernier scale moves in the opposite direction to the main scale.
  • Less commonly used but useful in certain instruments.

Example: 10 vernier divisions = 11 main scale divisions.

3. Least Count of Vernier Scale

The least count is the smallest measurement that can be read using the vernier scale.

  • Least Count = Value of 1 Main Scale Division – Value of 1 Vernier Scale Division

A smaller least count means higher accuracy.

4. Importance of Vernier Scale

  • Provides precise measurement of small values.
  • Improves accuracy in surveying instruments.
  • Essential for reading angles in theodolite.

5. Applications

  • Theodolite for angle measurement.
  • Vernier calipers for length measurement.
  • Scientific and engineering instruments.

Precautions

  • Read the scale carefully to avoid errors.
  • Ensure proper alignment of scales.
  • Avoid parallax while reading.

Role of Draughtsman Civil

A Draughtsman Civil uses vernier-based instruments for precise measurements. Understanding types of vernier scales helps in accurate reading and interpretation of field data.

Conclusion

Vernier scales are essential tools for precise measurement. The two main types—direct and retrograde—are used depending on the instrument and application.

For ITI Draughtsman Civil students, knowledge of vernier scale types is important for achieving accuracy in surveying and engineering work.
