Levelling – Minimum Equipment Required

Levelling is a fundamental operation in surveying used to determine the difference in elevation between points. To carry out levelling work efficiently and accurately, certain basic instruments and accessories are required. In ITI Draughtsman Civil, understanding the minimum equipment required for levelling is essential for practical fieldwork.

1. Importance of Minimum Equipment

The minimum equipment ensures that levelling work can be performed with accuracy while keeping the setup simple and economical. These tools are essential for beginners and small-scale surveys.

2. Basic Equipment Required

(a) Level Instrument

  • Main instrument used for levelling.
  • Types include auto level, dumpy level, and tilting level.
  • Provides a horizontal line of sight.

(b) Levelling Staff

  • Graduated rod used to take readings.
  • Held vertically on the point being observed.
  • Used to determine height differences.

(c) Tripod Stand

  • Supports the level instrument.
  • Provides stability during observations.
  • Adjustable legs for uneven ground.

(d) Staff Bubble (Optional but Useful)

  • Used to ensure the staff is held vertically.
  • Improves accuracy of readings.

(e) Field Book and Pencil

  • Used for recording observations and readings.
  • Essential for calculations and plotting.

3. Additional Accessories

Although not always essential, the following accessories help improve efficiency:

  • Measuring Tape: For measuring distances.
  • Pegs: For marking points on the ground.
  • Hammer: For fixing pegs.
  • Umbrella: To protect instrument from sunlight or rain.

4. Setup of Equipment

  1. Fix the level instrument on the tripod stand.
  2. Level the instrument using leveling screws.
  3. Place the levelling staff vertically on the point.
  4. Take readings through the telescope.
  5. Record readings in the field book.

5. Importance of Proper Equipment Use

  • Ensures accurate measurement of elevations.
  • Reduces chances of errors.
  • Improves efficiency of survey work.
  • Helps in preparing reliable maps and drawings.

6. Precautions While Using Equipment

  • Ensure proper leveling of the instrument.
  • Keep the staff vertical while taking readings.
  • Handle instruments carefully.
  • Record readings accurately.

Role of Draughtsman Civil

A Draughtsman Civil uses levelling data collected using these basic instruments to prepare profiles, sections, and contour maps. Proper knowledge of equipment ensures accurate and efficient surveying.

Conclusion

Levelling requires a minimum set of equipment including a level instrument, levelling staff, tripod stand, and field book. These tools are essential for carrying out accurate and efficient levelling work.

For ITI Draughtsman Civil students, understanding the minimum equipment required helps in developing practical skills and ensures successful surveying operations.
