ITI Draughtsman (Civil) Trade

The ITI "Draughtsman (Civil)" trade is a two-year vocational training program under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), governed by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). This course equips trainees with the skills to create detailed technical drawings, plans, and layouts for civil engineering projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, and water supply systems, using both manual drafting techniques and computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Elementary Electricity

Electricity is an essential part of modern life and plays a vital role in building construction and industrial activities. It is used for lighting, heating, operating machines, and powering various devices. In the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, basic knowledge of electricity is important for understanding electrical layouts and ensuring safe construction practices.

Elementary electricity deals with the basic concepts and principles of electric current, voltage, resistance, and circuits.

Definition of Electricity

Electricity is the flow of electric charge, usually carried by electrons through a conductor such as a wire. This flow of charge is known as electric current.

Basic Terms in Electricity

  • Electric Current (I): Flow of electric charge, measured in amperes (A).
  • Voltage (V): The potential difference that causes current to flow, measured in volts (V).
  • Resistance (R): Opposition to the flow of current, measured in ohms (Ω).
  • Power (P): Rate of energy consumption, measured in watts (W).

Ohm’s Law

Ohm’s Law states that the current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to resistance.

Formula: V = I × R

This law is fundamental in electrical calculations.

Types of Electric Current

1. Direct Current (DC)

  • Flows in one direction
  • Used in batteries and small devices

2. Alternating Current (AC)

  • Changes direction periodically
  • Used in domestic and industrial supply

Electric Circuits

An electric circuit is a closed path through which current flows. It consists of a source, conductors, and a load.

Types of Circuits

  • Series Circuit: Components are connected in a single path.
  • Parallel Circuit: Components are connected in multiple paths.

Conductors and Insulators

  • Conductors: Materials that allow current to flow (e.g., copper, aluminium).
  • Insulators: Materials that resist current flow (e.g., rubber, plastic).

Electrical Power and Energy

Electrical power is the rate at which electrical energy is consumed.

  • Power = Voltage × Current
  • Unit of power is watt (W)

Electrical energy is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Common Electrical Devices

  • Switch: Controls the flow of current
  • Fuse: Protects circuit from overload
  • Circuit Breaker: Automatically disconnects supply during faults
  • Socket: Provides connection for appliances

Safety Measures in Electricity

Safety is very important while dealing with electricity:

  • Avoid contact with live wires
  • Use insulated tools
  • Ensure proper earthing
  • Do not overload circuits

Earthing

Earthing is the process of connecting electrical equipment to the ground to prevent electric shock.

  • Provides safety to users
  • Prevents damage to appliances

Applications of Electricity

  • Lighting in buildings
  • Operation of machines
  • Heating and cooling systems

Importance in Draughtsman Civil Trade

Knowledge of elementary electricity helps draughtsmen in preparing building plans and coordinating with electrical systems. It ensures proper integration of electrical layouts in construction.

Conclusion

Elementary electricity provides the basic understanding of electrical concepts and systems. It is essential for safe and efficient use of electricity in buildings.

For students of the ITI Draughtsman Civil trade, knowledge of electricity is important for designing modern buildings with proper electrical facilities. It ensures safety, efficiency, and functionality in construction projects.
